c.1979 - Beeler Double Three-legged Gravity Escapement This escapement was invented by Lord Grimthorpe in 1840 for the Westminster Clock (Big Ben). It proved sucessful because of its ability to withstand exposure to the elements. A sizebale weight is used to create a force to protect the hands of a clock without interfering with the force needed to drive the pendulum. |
