Description |
1901 Oak Case 81h From the James Arthur Exhibit at HSNY: These multi-dial watches are two of many other examples with similar dials in the James Arthur Collection. Arthur was clearly inspired by these multiple dials, as he made a series of 8 day duration tall case clocks with a one-minute remontoir in New York in 1901. This example features a top dial that shows the seconds, lower right dial that shows the minutes, and lower left dial that shows the hours. This design eliminates the need for motion work, which helps to improve mechanical efficiency. With glass on three sides and a mirror on the back of the case, the movement can be seen from all sides. One clock from this series is illustrated in Arthur's 1909 book and it features the sculpture of a bull atop the case. This particular clock was donated to the collection by Maude Arthur, James Arthur's granddaughter. |
