Description |
Austrian chariot clock. Carved and painted wood, depiciting a man driving his chariot drawn behind two horses. The wheel of the chariot forming the dial of the clock. Narrow enameled chapter ring. Thirty-hour movement, grand sonnerie on two bells. The motif of chariots driven by characters from Greek and Roman mythology was used frequently in France during the late 19th and early 19th centuries. Figures of winged putti are most common. The cases usually were made with bronze andf marble making this particularly unique. The entire case of this clock is made iwth painted and gilded wood. The figure appears to be a depiction of a Roman emperor. It may also represent Napoleon who was frequently portrayed as an emperor. The movement is a brass square plate design with a verge escapement and grand sonnerie striking on two bells. |
