Description |
c.1830 transitional 95 1/2, Dial Repainted Henry Ober (Jr.) is noted at work as early as 1828 and as late as 1843. It is known that he owned property in West Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The cases with movements by Ober possess many stylistic similarities not encountered elsewhere in Lancaster County's Federal Period cabinetwork. Most telling of these details are the thin scroll pediments which terminate in conical-form rosettes, thin urn or spindle-shaped finials, consistent turned feet, and cross-hatching on the plinths that support the finials. One similar Ober case is signed by the cabinetmaker John Smith of West Donegal Township, and it has been concluded that all similar cases were made by Mr. Smith. This case is constructed of cherry wood with curly maple and mahogany veneers. It uses an 8-day brass movement with a deadbeat escapement and center seconds. The center seconds feature was frequently used in Southeast Pennsylvania. The dial has been repaired by Martha Smallwood of Dallas, Georgia. |
