Description |
Brass 8-day time and strike movement, rack and snail strike. Upper part of movement kidney shaped ending in cut out feet, attached to a seat board. Large bell on top, with the name "Hasham" lightly scratched on the inside of the bell around the hole, leading to a possible attribution to Stephen Hasham of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Kidney shaped opening in dial door. Painted iron dial , 5 1/2" in diameter, with arabic numerals, surrounded by a one piece decorated brass ring supported by a basket shaped base with an eliptical cartouche in the center. The cartouche is engraved "Warranted for S. Baker". A Susanna Weatherbee Baker, a distant relative of Stephen Hasham, was married in Charlestown in 1797. n It is possible the clock was made for her by Hasham. Mahagony cased with three flame finials on plinths with pierced slightly asymetrical frets on either side of the center plinth. Removable bonnet with kindney shaped opening for dial. Lower portion of bonnet with decorative panel giving the appearance of a shelf clock sitting on a plinth. Lower case with a rectangular door with applied molding, cross banded and string inlay around the edge with an oval fan inlay in the center. Reeded quarter columns with brass capitals. The freeded quarter columns actually make up the entire corner of the case rather than being attached to it. Satin wood inlay above the columns and mahogany inlay below. Turned feet on the front of the case and straignt French feet on the back. |
