Description |
c.1818 Looking-glass clock case with molded gesso design, gilded. Upper portion reverse glass painted with a 6 3/4" opening for the dial, and a small oval opening exposing a view of the short pendulum.. The painted metal dial is attached to the movement. The four squares in corners of the case front have applied reliefs of human heads, one in each corner, the upper two appear to be female, and the lower two male. The 8-day time and rack and snail strike movement has iron plates and brass wheels. The movement has a number of unique features including a decorative "saddle" to hold the pallets and make them easily removable. Another unique feature are the roller pinions which Ives invented. The pinions use wood bushings within the brass ends of the roller pinions. The pulleys for the weights are suspended from the top of the case. |
