Description |
The case of light colored wood, possibly maple or locust, has been rebuilt in later years using a distinctive bombe base typical of Dutch design in the 18th Century. The single panel door has a circular window 5 1/2 " in diameter in front of the pendulum bob. Circular brass The hood with arched top door is summonted by three wooden turned finials, the center finial 9 1/2" high. Arched brass dial with applied brass spandrels illustrating the four seasons: Hope (with anchor); a seated female, with driving rain in the background; Wisdom , with open book and starry heavens; and Justice, with scales. Moon dial with silvered and engraved chapter ring, silvered and engraved moon faces on a dark blue painted ground with gold stars. Within the dial ring the dial plate is cut out with triangular openings opposite the III and IX hour markers. Thru the opening at the right are seen the names of the days of the week; above which are engraved a figure of the deity for that day. At the apex of the triangle is a small circular opening thru which the astronomical symbol for the corresponding planet is displayed. The corresponding opening on the left shows the name of the month above which an engraving of an occupation or amusement appropriate for that month and above this the number of days in the month. The circular opening at the top indicates the number of days in the next month. The makers name, Frans van Brederode and Haerlem is ingraved below the XII. A rectangular opening for the calendar is located above the VI, however the calendar disk is missing. |
