Shelf Clock- c. 1830 8-day wood time and strike movement with "window-shade" alarm, Type 1.22, 10 1/2" mahogany plates, brass alarm disc, 5-spoke escape wheel. Separate bells for strike and alarm. Label: "Patent Eight-Day Clocks". Invented by Eli Terry. Made and Sold at Plymouth, Connecticut, by E. Terry & Sons. Goodwin & Co....Print....Hartford. Tables of Variation of the Sun from the Clock on sides of label. Painted wood Roman dial with seconds. Mahogany veneered case with flat side moldings and splat, looking glass in door, double bottom boards. This wooden 8 day movement has an upside-down strike train. Its crown wheel escapement with a helical torsion and spring alarm is believed to be the first to have adapted an alarm to the Conneticut shelf clock. |
