Later minute hand, gold hour hand. Full plate, fusee, verge escapement, 3-arm steel balance, pierced and engraved cock and foot with small mask, diamond endstone, Tompion regulator, Egyptian pillars, pierced fusee stop support, set-up regulator between barrel and pillar plate, winds through dial at 3:30 (possibly a later modification), top plate engraved in block letters "T. Tompion, London, 4198", C 1709 From the James Arthur Exhibit at HSNY: The movement is signed and numbered, and has an engraved balance cock with a large diamond endstone. The gilt brass case would have initially had a tortoiseshell or leather casing. Tomppion is considered to be the "father of English watchmaking" and was known for making high-quality movements and establishing the standard in creating a serial numbering system and making watches with fewer diferences within the same series. |
