Chronometer mounted in brass gimbals in hinged wooden box having brass hardware (hinges, latch, side handles), brass inlay on corners and ivory disk above latch.Box has two hinged lids. The middle of these fitted with glass. Dial marked Thos. Earnshaw, Inv.& Fecit No. 855" hours marked in Roman numerals. Seconds dial marked in Arabic in 10-second increments. |

Serial No. 850 Thomas Earnshaw Marine Chronometer , Circa 1790 Marine chronometer with brass movement. Dial marked Thos. Earnshaw, Inv.& Fecit No. 855" and has hours marked in Roman numerals. Second hand dial is marked in Arabic numbers in 10-second increments. Chronometer mounted in brass gimblas to maintain its level position, and the whole device then mounted in hinged wooden box having brass hardware (hinges, latch, side handles). Brass inlay on corners and ivory disk above latch. Wooden box has two hinged lids. The middle of these is fitted with glass pane on top so chronometer can be viewed while still fully encased. |
