Gerald Ford is the only person in US history to hold the offices of Vice President and President without being elected to either position. Ford replaced Vice-President Spiro Agnew on October 10, 1973, when Agnew pleaded no contest to Federal tax evasion and resigned. Just under a year later, then President Richard Nixon resigned over the Watergate scandal and left office on August 9, 1974 and Gerald Ford became the 38th President of the United States.
